I'm Ishwor Shrestha.

네팔 살라히 아동센터에서 활동하고 있는 Ishwor Shrestha 입니다.

고등학교 때 해외봉사 팀과 인연을 맺어 해외봉사자들이 오면 헌신적으로 도움을 주었던 네팔 현지 청소년봉사자로 

시작했다가 현재는 성인 되어 아동센터 스탭으로서 봉사 정신을 발휘하고 있는 친구입니다.

서비스포피스의 봉사활동으로 훈련된 청년답게 남다른 활동을 하고 있어 주변 네팔 사람들에게 귀감이 되고 있습니다.

인터뷰는 영어로 진행되었습니다.

           

            1.       What made you to be interested in the field of Social Work? What made you to join Service For Peace?

During my high school years, I was very impressed to see the work Scout was doing, and wished to be involved in the social work. After my graduation, I joined the local organization called Youth Network Dhading (YND). YND have participated in volunteer service camps called Global Peace Makers (GPM) organized by Service For Peace Korea. During my experience with YND, I was taught the core value of life—the joy of serving others. Therefore, I participated in different kinds of programs organized by Service For Peace since 2007.

 1. 자원봉사활동에 관심을 가지게 된 계기는 무엇입니까? 무엇이 당신을 SFP에 지원하게 만들었나요?

고등학교 시절에 저는 스카우트가 하고 있는 활동에 매우 깊은 감명을 받았었고, 그래서 자원봉사활동에 동참하고 싶었습니다. 졸업을 한 후에는 “Youth Network Dhading” (YND)이라는 지역 단체에 참여하게 되었습니다. YND는 SFP에서 진행하는 “Global PeaceMakers” (GPM) 해외 봉사 캠프와 함께 활동하였습니다. YND에서의 활동을 통하여 저는 삶의 보람이 되는 핵심가치를 배울 수 있었고, 그것은 남을 위하여 봉사를 하는 것이었습니다. 그렇기 때문에, 저는 2007년부터 SFP가 주관하는 다양한 프로그램들에 참여하였습니다. 

      2.      What was your duty in Sarlahi? How is the lifestyle in Sarlahi different from the lifestyle in Kathmandu or Dhading where you grew up?

I am managing the overall operation of the Children Center and caring children with daily needs. Lifestyle in Sarlahi is quite different because of hot weather, unreliable transportation services and cultural differences thanks to regional and language differences.

   2.    Sarlahi에서 역할은 무엇이었습니까? Sarlahi에서의 생활은 카트만두나 당신의 성장 배경인 Dhading에서의 삶의 배경과 어떻게 다릅니까?

저는 아동 센터의 전반적인 관리를 도맡고 있고, 매일 보호가 필요한 아이들을 돌보고 있습니다. Sarlahi에는 더운 날씨와 더불어 불편한 대중교통과 언어와 지역적인 요소에 의한 문화 차이가 있습니다. 

3.      What kind of changes was made? How is the Children Center or children different now or what kind of changes was made compared to the day you first arrived in Sarlahi?

Kids have learned to drive themselves, are more confident and feel the ownership of this center. I have tried to be their friend and was involved with every activity with them so that they can share anything or any problems freely. Many structural and materials have changed such as office structure, new study room, new generator, invertor, and so on. Moreover, I feel staff is happier than ever before.

       3.  이곳에서 어떠한 변화가 있었나요?? 아동 센터나 아이들이 현재 어떻게 달라졌습니까? 당신이 처음 Sarlahi에 왔을 때와 비교해서 어떻게 달라졌습니까?

아이들은 스스로에게 동기를 부여할 수 있게 되었고, 자신감을 갖게 되었으며, 이곳에 대한 애착심이 생겼습니다. 저는 그 아이들과 자유롭게 문제점을 교류하고 소통하기 위해서 친한 친구가 되기 위하여 노력하였습니다. 그리고 사무실 구조, 새로운 공부방, 새로운 발전기, 변압기 등 많은 기구들이 새로 설치되거나 바뀌었습니다. 뿐만 아니라, 스탭들이 전과는 비교할 수 없을 정도로 행복함을 느끼고 있습니다.

     4.      As a manager of the Sarlahi Children Center, I am sure you must have many interesting episodes while living there. Please share with us.

I grew up in the hilly region of Nepal, and it was my first time living in the Terai region (plain) for a long period. In my hometown and Kathmandu, there are many shops and markets are opened daily so there is no special day for shopping. Here in Sarlahi, there is a market day twice a week. Since I love busy and crowded places, I always wait for the market day and feel very happy whenever I go shopping on the market day. Another thing that I loved the most about Sarlahi is the fact that I can see the beautiful sky day and night. During the day, I can see the beautiful and interesting clouds and I can even see the galaxy and shooting stars at night. One of the nights that I remember the most was my birthday. Staff and children prepared a surprising birthday party and we celebrated together, danced and enjoyed all night. I was very happy to celebrate my birthday with my beloved kids and co-workers and I will never forget that night. There are many other interesting episodes and I feel grateful to have many beautiful memories from my work experience. 

       4. Sarlahi 아동 센터의 매니저로서 많은 흥미로운 에피소드들이 있을 것 같은데 함께 공유해 주실래요?

저는 네팔의 언덕이 많은 지역에서 자랐고 오랜 기간 동안 평지에서 생활을 하는 것이 새로운 경험이었습니다. 제 고향과 Kathmandu에는 다양한 상점과 시장이 매일 열리고 그렇기 때문에 쇼핑을 하는 특별한 날이 존재하지 않습니다. 이 곳 Sarlahi에는 시장이 일주일에 두 번만 열립니다. 제가 사람이 많아서 북적이는 곳을 좋아하기 때문에 항상 시장이 열리는 날을 기다리고, 장을 볼 때에는 매우 행복했습니다. 제가 Sarlahi에서 가장 좋아한 점은 낮과 밤에 아름다운 하늘을 감상할 수 있다는 점이었습니다. 낮에는 아름답고 흥미로운 구름을 보고 밤에는 반짝이는 은하와 별들을 볼 수 있었습니다. 제가 가장 잘 기억하는 밤은 제 생일 날 밤입니다. 스탭과 아이들이 저를 위하여 깜짝 생일 파티를 열어주었고 우리는 다같이 축하하고 춤을 추며 즐겼습니다. 저는 제가 사랑하는 아이들과 동료들과 생일을 축하할 수 있어서 매우 기뻤고 저는 그 밤을 잊을 수 없을 것입니다. 저는 이 외에도 제 직업과 관련된 다른 흥미로운 에피소드들이 있고 이런 아름다운 추억 거리들을 가지고 있는 것에 대하여 감사하고 있습니다. 

   5.      What was the challenging thing while working and staying in the Children Center?

One of the main problems of the Children Center is throwing wastage water from the toilet. Since we only have small land, there is no place to throw this dirty water. Another problem is viral fever, many mosquitos and snakes that occasionally appears in the neighborhoods during hot season.

         5. 아동 센터에서 근무하고 생활하면서 힘든 점은 무엇이었습니까?

아동 센터의 주요 문제점은 화장실에서 폐수를 처리하는 것이었습니다. 우리는 작은 지역에서 살았기 때문에 폐수를 버릴 곳이 없습니다. 다른 문제점은 바이러스성 열병, 많은 해충, 그리고 여름에 가끔씩 출현하는 뱀이었습니다.

 

6.      What will be your next step of your life after leaving Sarlahi? What is your long-term goal?

I will pursue my further study in art in Kathmandu. I have a dream to be a good artist. But, I am sure I will not stop doing social work and support our Children Center.

6.  Sarlahi를 떠난 후 당신의 삶의 계획은 무엇입니까? 당신의 장기적인 목표는 무엇입니까?

저는 Kahtmandu에서 계속 미술을 공부할 계획입니다. 저는 훌륭한 미술가가 되고 싶은 꿈이 있습니다. 그리고 저는 이 꿈을 위하여 준비하면서 아동 센터에서도 계속 봉사 활동을 할 계획입니다. 

 

 

7.      If you have anything you want to share to our youth audience, please tell us.

Youths are the power, spirit, and motivator. There is nothing impossible for them to do. They can do anything and could bring any kinds of positive changes. Have the ownership whatever you do, realize the value of life and lead your life towards your goal. And on the way, look around you and see if there is anyone who needs help, and offer your hands to the people in need. You will be able to enjoy the peace in this world.

          7.   그밖에 더 나누고 싶은 이야기가 있다면..

청소년들은 희망이자 동기이자 정신입니다. 그들에게 불가능이란 없다고 생각합니다. 그들은 어떠한 일들도 이루어낼 수 있으며 긍정적인 변화를 가져올 수 있습니다. 무엇을 하든 애착을 가지면서 하고, 삶의 가치를 깨닫고, 자신만의 삶의 목표를 향해서 정진하기를 바랍니다. 그리고 주변에 있는 사람들에게 관심을 가지고 도움을 줄 수 있어야 합니다. 세상 속에서의 평화를 즐길 수 있을 것입니다.
