Making EM Red Clay Balls For Water Quality Improvement
본 프로젝트는 사회, 경제, 환경의 지속성을 보존하기 위해 100개국 15,000명 이상이 2013년 4월 16일부터 22일까지 참여하는 국제행사, “Sustainatopia 2013”의 Top line partner로 서비스포피스재단이 세계 각국에서 진행하는 “Global Waterway Clean up project"의 하나로 마련되었습니다.
2013년 4월 8일, 경기도 이천에서 서비스포피스 재단의 민들레성인봉사단과 청아대학생봉사단 20여명이 모여 EM 흙공 만들기가 진행되었습니다.

On April 8, 2013, more than 20 people from the Dandelion Senior Volunteer Group and Cheong-A Youth Volunteer Group gathered, and made EM Red Clay Balls in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do.

EM 발효액을 만들기 위해 일주일전부터 쌀뜨물에 숙성시켜야 하는 준비가 필요하고, 그것을 가지고 황토와 혼합하면 흙공이 완성됩니다.
흙공을 만들기 전 한 자리에 모인 봉사자에게 EM 흙공에 대한 간단한 설명과 봉사 시작을 위한 짧은 아이스브레이킹을 함으로써 봉사에 임하는 마음가짐을 다시 한번 점검하였습니다.
EM Clay Balls are made out of EM fermented liquor, and this needs at least a week to prepare.
The program started with brief ice breaking games which brought volunteers close together. Also, they were very motivated after learning about the EM Red Clay Balls.
본격적으로 흙공만들기가 시작됩니다.
도예의 본고장인 이천에서 바로 실어 나른 황토를 고르게 펼쳐서 햇볕에 적당히 건조시킨 후 발효된 EM 발효액과 살겨, 설탕, 황토를 적절하게 배합하여 반죽을 만듭니다.
First, we brought the red Red clay from Icheon, home of pottery, and made it smooth and even. Then, we dried in the sun. Last, we made dough by mixing EM fermented liquid, rice brain, sugar and clay.
봉사자들의 정성이 가득할수록 흙공에서 유익한 분해효소가 잘 자란다고 합니다.
이렇게 해서 야구공만한 크기의 흙공이 완성되었습니다.
It is said that as volunteers put their whole mind to it, breakdown enzyme grows well.
With volunteers’ sincere efforts, the EM Red clay balls in the size of baseballs were made.
약 5시간에 걸쳐 작업한 흙공 약 600개가 완성되었습니다.
600 EM Red Clay Balls were made in about 5 hours.
이렇게 만들어진 흙공은 약 일주일에서 15일정도의 추가 발효를 거쳐서 각 지역 하천과 바다에 1미터 간격으로 던져질 것입니다. 흙공은 물이 고여있는 곳 뿐만 아니라 물살이 약한 곳에도 좋다고 합니다. 한번 던져진 흙공은 6개월에서 최대 1년간 물속에서 천천히 녹으면서 물속에 있는 오염물질을 분해시키는 미생물을 만들어낸다고 합니다.
After extra fermentation process which takes about one week to two weeks, these balls will be thrown in the local rivers and the sea at intervals of 1 meter. These balls are good not only in the stagnant water, but also where the current is weak. Each EM Clay Ball makes microbe which dissolves contaminants for at least six months to one year.
자연에서 대안을 찾는 EM흙공,,,,,던지는 장소를 멀리서 찾을 게 아니라 가까운 우리동네부터 살리고자 민들레봉사단 각지부에서 가까운 하천에 투척할 예정입니다.
지구를 위해 배려하고 함께 하는 자원봉사자들의 마음이 자연을 다시 깨끗한 자연으로 돌아오게 할 것을 기대하며 일주일 후 각 지부별로 흙공이 하천으로 보내지는 소식을 전하도록 하겠습니다.
These will be thrown in the nearby rivers where Dandelion Volunteer Group’ branches are located. What an easy way to restore environment in our town!
We hope that their efforts to serve the earth will bring beautiful and clean water back to us. In a week, I will deliver news about throwing these Red balls into the water from each branch.
